For big conferences, staying close matters more than which hotel. Being able to drop back to your room between sessions is underrated.
Book the conference block early — you can usually cancel for free — and keep looking. I've switched to cheaper options closer to the date.
If you're on a budget, share a room with a colleague. That's what almost every grad student I know does.
